It’s Mental Health Awareness Week this week. To mark it, we’re highlighting the devastating and often hidden impact illegal money lending can have on mental health – and reminding people that support is available.In 2025, one in three people supported by Stop Loan Sharks said they had considered taking their own life. Many were driven to extreme distress by threats, harassment and fear - often after borrowing from someone they thought was a friend. Almost all told us they experienced pressure or intimidation.But there is a light at the end of the tunnel.People we supported told us:“A massive weight had been lifted.”“I felt reassured and never pressured.”“Please take that step - don’t let anyone put you off.”We’re not just here to investigate loan sharks. A man was arrested in the Wickford area of Essex today on suspicion of being a loan shark.The arrest comes as we are marking #StopLoanSharksWeek - making it #gameoverforloansharksOur officers worked alongside Essex Police and Essex County Council Trading Standards on today's intervention.
