We’ve been in Newcastle this week, working with Newcastle University at the Festival of Social Science in Grainger Market!It was fantastic to see so many people stopping by our stall to get involved. Visitors tested their knowledge with our ‘Guess Who?’ game, discovering that loan sharks aren't always easy to spot and can be anyone. They also explored just how much more a loan from a loan shark can cost compared to borrowing from a legitimate lender.The conversations were honest, engaging and thought-provoking, with many people sharing their views and experiences around borrowing and financial pressures.A huge thank you to everyone at Newcastle University who helped create resources and support the stall throughout the day. We were also delighted to be alongside a range of organisations helping people learn more about financial safety and where to access support.Events like these are a great opportunity to challenge misconceptions, raise awareness and encourage discussions about safe borrowing and financial wellbeing.#stoploansharksengland#financialeducation ...

Ahoy me hearties! 🏴‍☠️🦜We have some exciting news!A new children’s book is being launched next week – helping youngsters understand money, borrowing and the dangers of loan sharks.Doubling Doubloons has been created by author and illustrator Phil Sheppard in partnership with Stop Loan Sharks.The book follows Cat and Frog as they borrow money from Captain Sprinkles to buy ice creams, only to discover their debt quickly doubles. Sid the Shark has been clocking up the miles over the past few days, spreading the Stop Loan Sharks message and getting stuck into some fantastic community events.First stop was Brighton & Hove City Council, where we were running guest workshops the the town hall as part of a community event for council tenants and leaseholders. Mayor Theresa Fowler was delighted to meet Sid in person!Sid then headed to Manchester for the Living Well with Dementia event at Limelight Health and Well-being Hub where he was put through his paces!And most recently, Sid got stuck into a community clean-up in Ormesby, near Middlesbrough, working alongside Beyond Housing, Redcar & Cleveland Borough Council and Cleveland Fire Brigade UK. The clean-up will also help efforts to reduce anti-social behaviour and arson in the run-up to Bonfire Night. A 35-year-old man was arrested in Salford early today on suspicion of illegal money lending and money laundering. We worked with @gmpolice to execute a warrant in the Walkden area. We also worked with @SalfordCouncil Trading Standards.

This is the loan shark who was jailed for 14 months after running an illegal lending operation for over 10 years.
Philip Lister lent over £950,000 and expected over £1.7 million in return.

What is a loan shark?

If you can answer yes to one or more of these questions you might be borrowing from a loan shark:

  • Did they offer you a quick loan?
  • Did they appear to be a friend at first, but now you're not so sure?
  • Did they say there was no need for any paperwork?
  • Did they add extra charges or huge amounts of interest to your loan?
  • Have they threatened you?
  • Are you scared of people finding out?
  • Have they taken your bank card, passport, or other valuables from you?

What happens after you get in touch?

We will be with you at every step of the way. Our investigators work alongside our Liaise Officers. They will get you the one to one support you need.

After you get in touch with us you will be offered the support you need. If you decide to report a loan shark, our investigators take the information you give us and look into what is going on. Their aim is to gather enough evidence to build a case against the illegal lender.
