Borrowing money online can be convenient, but it also comes with risks. More illegal lenders are moving online and targeting borrowers through websites, social media and messaging apps. You may come across offers of loans on social media platforms, such as Facebook, Reddit, Instagram or X, but beware, they might not be all they seem. It’s Safer Internet Day today, organised by the UK Safer Internet Centre.and here are our top five tips for staying safe if you are thinking about borrowing online:👀1. Check, check… and check againAlways verify a lender’s credentials. Call them, read customer reviews, and make sure they’re registered with the FCA (Financial Conduct Authority). Check they have a full address, contact details, and a secure website (look for the 🔒 in the address bar).🙋‍♀️ 2. Beware of a ‘friend’ offering a favourIf it sounds too good to be true, it probably is. Over half of the people supported by Stop Loan Sharks thought they were borrowing from a friend. But that friendly approach can quickly turn into intimidation and even violence. Also beware of cold-callers.💳3. Be wary of upfront fees, promises and pressureLegitimate lenders will never ask for money upfront and will always carry out credit checks before agreeing to issue a loan. They won’t rush or pressure you into making a quick decision.🕵️4. Read the terms carefullyA genuine lender will have the terms of the loan clearly laid out, including interest rate, repayments. If you’re given no paperwork, it could be a sign your lender is illegal.🚩5. Watch out for red flagsSpelling mistakes, strange grammar, or unusual email addresses can all be warning signs of a scam.Think you’ve been scammed? Go to www.reportfraud.police.ukAnd if you’ve borrowed from someone you think may be a loan shark, Stop Loan Sharks can offer free, confidential help and advice. What is a loan shark?

If you can answer yes to one or more of these questions you might be borrowing from a loan shark:

  • Did they offer you a quick loan?
  • Did they appear to be a friend at first, but now you're not so sure?
  • Did they say there was no need for any paperwork?
  • Did they add extra charges or huge amounts of interest to your loan?
  • Have they threatened you?
  • Are you scared of people finding out?
  • Have they taken your bank card, passport, or other valuables from you?

What happens after you get in touch?

We will be with you at every step of the way. Our investigators work alongside our Liaise Officers. They will get you the one to one support you need.

After you get in touch with us you will be offered the support you need. If you decide to report a loan shark, our investigators take the information you give us and look into what is going on. Their aim is to gather enough evidence to build a case against the illegal lender.

How we help

Stop Loan Sharks investigate, prosecute and put loan sharks in prison. We are the only organisation in England who have the power to stop loan sharks and illegal money lenders.

Since 2004, we have supported over 32,500 people to get safely away from loan sharks.
