Thanks so much to Utilita Energy for taking part in our training sessions recently, helping staff learn the dangers of loan sharks and how to spot when someone might be in debt to one.Not being able to pay household utility bills is often an early sign that someone is struggling financially.It is vital that the right questions are asked at this stage to establish what the issue is and what support that person needs.Sometimes the root cause can be that someone is in debt to a loan shark, and if that is the case, people can be referred to Stop Loan Sharks England for specialist help and support.An incredible 44 members of staff took part in five training sessions, and it seems our messages really struck a chord.Here is some of the feedback we had: 📢 “…able to give additional support to all customers and signpost correctly…”📢 “…know the signs on what to look out for moving forward…”📢 “It’s made me more aware that loan sharks can be anybody and that anybody could be a victim. I feel confident with how to approach whether somebody is a loan shark victim with what questions to ask and where to go for loan shark support.”The Financial Conduct Authority recently released new figures showing that, although things are improving, 7.4 million people are still struggling with domestic bills.Last year a third of the people supported by Stop Loan Sharks England said they borrowed from a loan shark for everyday bills and costs.It’s great to see the FCA taking action over this, ensuring better protection for borrowers.And it’s also great to see big-name energy companies like Utilita getting involved with our training to find out what they can do to help.One final bit of feedback was that “all utility organisations should offer this” and we couldn’t agree more.If you work for an energy company and you would like to find out more about how you can help your customers get in touch with us through stoploansharks.co.uk or email catherine.wohlers@birmingham.gov.uk#StopLoanSharks#stoploansharksengland#energybills ... Two people have been arrested in Salford today following an operation by the England Illegal Money Lending Team in partnership with @SalfordCouncil Trading Standards and @gmpolice.
